Infusion pumps are used for patients who require an infusion of fluids as part of their therapy. These fluids contain medication for disease management, pain control, provision of nutrients, faster recovery, hydration, and blood replenishment. Within this analysis, five market segments were analyzed in detail:

  • Electronic ambulatory pumps
  • PCA pumps
  • Syringe pumps
  • Large volume pumps
  • Others

iData’s recently completed MedSKU analysis includes an overview of the companies, products, and segments. In addition, iData’s analysis includes metrics such as revenue, units sold, unit share, revenue share, and average selling prices (ASPs). Based on the data, the revenue and units sold were already decreasing before COVID-19 hit. Despite this, certain companies increased the number of units sold for specific brands into the first quarter of 2021.

MOST POPULAR INFUSION PUMP BRANDS PER SEGMENT

(based on the number of units sold in the first quarter of 2021)

Electronic Ambulatory Infusion Pumps

  1. Sapphire Multi-Therapy (Q Core)
  2. Curlin 6000 PainSmart (Moog)

Electronic ambulatory pumps are smaller and more portable than other types of electronic pumps. Both Q Core and Moog increased their units sold from the fourth quarter of 2020 into the first quarter of 2021 by a noticeable amount. Similarly, the revenue for these brands increased as the number of units sold increased. The market for electronic ambulatory pumps has been on the rise since the first quarter of 2019. Since then, the market has continued to increase throughout the global COVID-19 pandemic while all other segments have decreased.

PCA Pumps

  1. LifeCare PCA 7 (ICU Medical)
  2. Perfusor Space PCA (B. Braun)

Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pumps are a more niche type of device used specifically for pain therapy. Overall, the PCA market has been declining since the first quarter of 2019. The PCA pump market took hard hits from COVID-19 in the first quarter of 2020, further influencing the market’s downward trajectory. In terms of the most units sold, ICU Medical’s LifeCare PCA 7 pump leads. However, between the fourth quarter of 2020 and the first quarter of 2021, the units sold for the LifeCare PCA 7 decreased.

Large Volume Pumps

  1. Plum 360 (ICU Medical)
  2. Spectrum IQ (Baxter)

Large volume infusion pumps are one of the most common types of pumps and are popular in many infusion procedures. All in all, the large volume infusion pump market has been relatively stable, outside of COVID-19 fluctuations and a challenging Q1 ’21. ICU Medical’s Plum 360 large volume infusion pump sold the most units by a vast majority throughout the first quarter of 2021. Despite the apparent success, this number was less than the number of units sold in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Syringe Pumps

  1. MedFusion 4000 (Smiths Medical)
  2. Alaris Syringe Module (BD)

Syringe pumps are also quite common but are mostly used to precisely control the rate of infusion from syringes. Since the first quarter of 2019, the market for syringe pumps has been looking down. COVID-19 had a major impact on this market and has since caused fluctuations making it challenging for recovery to pre-COVID levels. Smiths Medical was able to sell the most number of units with its MedFusion 4000 syringe pump despite the number being slightly less than the number sold in the fourth quarter of 2020.
