GenesisCare specialist cancer care centre launches dense breast screening service

GenesisCare, the UK’s leading specialist cancer care provider with 14 UK outpatient centres, officially launches its new screening service for patients with dense breast tissue in Oxford and Windsor today.

Often described as looking for a snowball in a snowstorm, detecting breast cancer from a mammogram in patients with dense breast tissue can be extremely difficult. However, with breast cancer being the most common cancer in the UK and the fourth most common cause of cancer deaths in the UK, detecting all breast cancers early is vital.

From today, women aged 40 and over, who have dense breast tissue, can benefit from a rapid breast MRI scan for early detection of cancer at GenesisCare’s centre in Oxford and Windsor.

Dr. Fleur Kilburn-Toppin, Consultant Radiologist and Specialist Advisor at GenesisCare says: “Dense breasts are when you have a more fibrous and glandular tissue and less fatty tissue, and around half of women in their 40’s will have dense breasts. An MRI scan is a more sensitive screening test than a standard mammogram and is significantly better at detecting breast cancer in women with dense breasts”.

Currently breast MRI scans, like the service launching at GenesisCare in Oxford and Windsor today, aren’t widely available as standard screening unless you have a very high risk of breast cancer.

Dr. Fleur Kilburn-Toppin continues: “It’s harder to spot early signs of cancer in dense breasts using a standard mammogram and having dense breasts can also increase your chance of getting breast cancer. An MRI scan can give you peace of mind if the scan is clear. If we do detect breast cancer, then finding the cancer early is important so you can get the treatment you need as soon as possible.”
