Pharma & Medtech Expo – 28th & 29th May, 2024 – RDS Simmonscourt, Dublin

The Pharma and MedTech Expo is being held on May 28th and 29th, 2024, at RDS Simmonscourt in Dublin. Through a comprehensive Conference programme accompanied by an extensive exhibition of the latest equipment and technology available, the Event will highlight the key trends and the challenges facing the pharmaceutical & life sciences and medtech & biotech sectors in Ireland, while also showcasing the latest innovations and developments in best practice, and new solutions available.

Ireland has a strong track record in developing its R&D and innovation infrastructure to foster collaboration between academia and business, and the county is now recognised globally for its strengths in manufacturing sectors such as pharmaceuticals and chemicals, medical devices, food and drink, computers, electronics and engineering.

In the region of 100,000 people are currently employed across 250 IDA Ireland supported medical technology and biopharmaceutical companies as the sector continues to deliver economic and social benefits to the country.

Pharmaceuticals and Life Sciences

Ireland has become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of medicines and five of the world’s eight top selling drugs are currently produced here. The world’s ten leading pharmaceutical companies have all established substantial operations in Ireland and the country has become the third largest exporter of pharmaceuticals globally.

Supporting thousands of jobs and spread across the various regions, the Irish pharmaceutical and life sciences industry contributes significantly to both the national and local economies. The reasons for Ireland’s success in developing a thriving pharmaceutical and life sciences sector are chiefly due to access to a well educated and talented workforce, the lower corporation tax regime, an economic environment that encourages R&D and innovation, along with a strong track record of both international and local companies operating successfully in the country.

The pharmaceutical and life sciences sector in Ireland is continuing to invest in future growth. For instance, Pfizer, the world’s largest biopharma company, is investing more than €1.2 billion in its Grange Castle, Dublin manufacturing site, while Eli Lilly is spending nearly $1 billion at its new biologics drug substance manufacturing facility in Limerick. MSD Ireland, one of the country’s leading healthcare companies, recently official opened its new, state-of-the-art site in Meath in addition to a significant expansion at its Carlow site, following investment of over €1 billion across both facilities.

However, despite its successes, the pharmaceutical and life sciences sector in Ireland is currently experiencing significant challenges around supply chain issues, digital transformation, automation, carbon reduction and regulatory changes. The Pharma and MedTech Expo will address these issues and offer practical advice on how they can be successfully managed.

Medtech and Biotech

Ireland is now a well-established global leader in medtech and biotechnology. Nine of the world’s top ten medtech companies have a base in Ireland. Indeed, Ireland is one of the top seven employers of medtech professionals in Europe, with more than 40,000 people currently working in the sector.

Furthermore, there are now more than 450 medtech companies operating in Ireland with over 60% having been developed locally. In the biotechnology sector, there are well over 300 companies operating in Ireland. Indeed, all but one of the world’s 25 largest biotech and pharma companies have a presence in Ireland.

The Pharma and MedTech Expo will focus on the global growth opportunities, as well as major trends such as digital health and the shift to value-based healthcare and the long-term implications for manufacturers.
