New IBMS and PA Consulting Diagnostic Pathway Framework
"Earlier Diagnostics: End-to-End Diagnostic Pathways" offers strategic blueprint for optimising UK diagnostic services
The IBMS and global innovation consultancy PA Consulting have released the second paper in our "Earlier Diagnostics" series. Titled "Earlier Diagnostics: End-to-End Diagnostic Pathways," the report outlines critical improvements needed across all stages of the diagnostic process, from initial sample collection through to timely communication of results.
With UK healthcare facing rising demands, workforce shortages, and increasingly complex medical conditions, enhancing the diagnostic pathway is essential. Building on insights from industry leaders, healthcare professionals, and patient advocates, the report highlights targeted interventions to optimise each diagnostic phase.
Key recommendations include:
- Standardising the Pre-Analytical Phase: Establishing uniform protocols for sample collection, labelling, and transportation, complemented by real-time tracking systems. This reduces errors and ensures quicker, more reliable sample handling.
- Enhancing Analytical Efficiency with Automation and AI: Implementing laboratory automation and AI-driven diagnostics to streamline test processing, prioritise urgent cases, and maintain high accuracy, easing strain on laboratory staff.
- Improving Post-Analytical Communication: Integrating diagnostic IT systems with clinical care platforms to provide faster, transparent result reporting to clinicians and patients, ensuring clear, actionable data that supports informed healthcare decisions.
- Bringing Diagnostics Closer to Patients: Expanding community-based diagnostic centres and home testing solutions, thereby ensuring equitable access, particularly for underserved communities. Initiatives like Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs) demonstrate the potential to reduce delays and improve overall patient care.
David Wells, Chief Executive of IBMS, commented:
Improving diagnostics is not only about speed — it’s about shifting towards prevention and ensuring equitable care. By optimising every stage of the diagnostic pathway, we can significantly improve patient outcomes and build a sustainable, responsive healthcare system.
Jennifer Law, Pathology Lead at PA Consulting, added:
Getting a diagnosis shouldn’t be an uphill battle. We need to consider the full diagnostic pathway to reduce delays, improve communication, and put patients first. This report provides practical guidance to make diagnostics faster, more transparent, and ready for the future .
The full report "Earlier Diagnostics: End-to-End Diagnostic Pathways" is available now, setting the stage for the final paper in the series, which will address further strategies for sustaining UK diagnostic services.
